Installing a portable Level 2 "Plug and Play" EV charger is more straightforward than a hard-wired unit since it typically uses an existing 240V outlet. Here's a guide to setting up one at your home:
Check the Outlet Type:
First, determine the type of plug your portable charger comes with. Common types include NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-20. Your outlet should match the plug type.
Outlet Installation by TECHNICIAN (if needed). If you don't have an appropriate outlet, you'll need to install one. For this, you might want to hire a qualified electrician.
Evaluate Outlet Location:
The outlet should be close to where you'll be parking your EV, considering the length of the charger's cable. If you need to install a new outlet, choose a location that minimizes the distance between the outlet and your EV's charging port for convenience.
Ensure Adequate Electrical Capacity:
Your home should have an electrical panel that can handle the additional load. Most Level 2 chargers require a 240V circuit and can draw between 16 to 40 amps, depending on the unit.
An electrician can verify if your current system can handle this or if panel upgrades are needed.
Once installed, turn the power back on and ensure the outlet is functional.
Connect the Portable Charger:
Simply plug the charger into the 240V outlet. Since it's "Plug and Play," there's no need for complicated setups.
Ground Fault Protection:
Our portable chargers should have built-in Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection. Ensure this is active to protect against potential electrical shocks.
Test the Charger:
Connect the charger to your EV and ensure that it begins charging. Look for the indicator Green light and voice command that confirm the charging process has started.
Storage and Safety:
When not in use, store the charger in a safe, dry location.
Avoid leaving it lying on the ground where it can be subjected to water or physical damage.
Periodically inspect the charger, cable, and plug for any signs of wear or damage.
Note: While "Plug and Play" chargers offer ease of use, always follow the manufacturer's safety guidelines and recommendations. If you're unsure about the electrical requirements or the installation of a new outlet, consult with a professional electrician.
